Perth has a growing small bar culture that is rapidly becoming renowned across the globe as one of the most unique and interesting aspects of the local tourism. Small bars are not just intimate, they are a great way to discover new things and have an experience like no other.
I headed off with Two Feet and A Heartbeat to discover these hidden gems as a part of the Home Roaming Project, with no expectations I was simply blown away with the amazing places we found.
Two Feet and a Heartbeat have been running the Eat Drink Walk Perth tours for some time now and have had some seriously big reviews- ranking in the top 10 of Perth to-do’s on Trip Adviser. I can definitely see why- the guide (Ellie) was simply amazing, she knew her history, bar culture and knew how to involve everybody- which in an intimate setting like this was vital. The best part- this tour is constantly evolving. As the bar scene grows and new ones open, the tour seems to find the pick of the bunch and you are really surprised where some of these places pop up! This brings me to the fine facilities we visited, Canton Bar, Belasyse and Choo Choo’s.
1. Canton Bar
Asian inspired and only known to those who can find it- this place was my favourite. Up a winding staircase in the quieter part of town, Canton is really different. From the funky interior to the little rooftop smokers lounge, it is so qwerky and cool. Here we tried some of the tapas style specialties like steamed pork buns and endame beans- really good food and great service. This is a secret from the masses but it really must be shared!!!!
Where is it hidden? 532 Hay Street, Perth (The red doorway!)
2. Choo Choo’s
This tiny storage space has been converted into one of Perth’s best cocktail bars. The tenders have over 15 years’ experience and it really shows. No menu- no price list- it’s all up to you what you want. This concept is so great because everybody gets talking and you experience the bar scene in a way most haven’t- getting to know the bar staff and creating something magical, together! This place hold only 90 people at capacity, so it is very intimate and very cool.
Where is it hidden? Brookfield Place- Lower Plaza, Perth CBD
3. Belasyse Bar and Restaurant
Named after Bridget Belasyse, the mistress of Sir Shafto that died of a broken heart, Belasyse Bar brings you a gloomy, fairy tale-gone-wrong vibe and is interesting in many ways. The bar and restaurant has an alfresco and the interior seating, fountains and some cool artwork that gets you talking. Add some awesome cocktails and this place is perfect for a casual lunch with friends.
Where is it Hidden? 4b Shafto Lane, Perth
