When I arrived in Zurich by Eurail, the station was buzzing with locals and tourists looking for their connecting rides. Eager to head into peace and quiet, a short ten minute taxi ride and I found myself at the luxe Hotel Storchen. I had to pause a moment to take in the Limmat River, just four meters away from the front entrance itself. The bright Turquoise waters and fresh air instantly calm you and you know you are home.

The Low-Down

The Storchen was first established in 1357 (that makes it over 650 years old!) and rebuilt in 1938 to what today, is a landmark of Zurich City. The Hotel stands overlooking the beautiful River Limmat, were swimming and water sports are dotted across its banks in summer months, the nearby churches and old town are all within 5 minutes’ walk, so this truly is the ideal location for anyone heading to Zurich!

The Experience

Very rarely do you find staff so helpful, knowledgeable and caring. Upon arrival on a very hot, Friday afternoon in July, we were greeted with warm smiles and the concierge was very helpful with our oversized bags. To my surprise, we were given an upgrade to the Junior Suite- an opulent and bright room overlooking the River, City and surrounds. It was deluxe- but more on that later.

Breakfast is served from 7am-10am on the ‘Rôtisserie’ restaurant overlooking the river, with just as much kindness and care put into the gourmet Swiss buffet as to the hotel decor itself, the dining experience is first-class. If you are staying elsewhere in Zurich between April and October, I would highly recommend popping by the Storchen Boulevard-Café downstairs for a cold drink and light meal, you can experience the service and delightful views at any time of the day!

Being a gluten intolerant, I was shocked to be offered freshly baked, gluten free loaves- just for me! It is hospitality like this that gives the Storchen such a grand reputation in the hotel industry.

The 24-hour concierge is also a handy service to take advantage of, with great recommendations, activities and a taxi booking service available, they even printed my next boarding pass to Greece for me!

The Rooms

Luxury. Pure Luxury. I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a Junior Suite, one of just 67 boutique rooms in the Storchen. The Suite was breathtaking, I instantly wanted to jump on the comfy king sized bed doting the softest linen you have ever touched. I was in pure bliss.

The bathroom, complete with waterfall shower, was just as extravagant as the bright and airy room, with full amenities and marble façade. It is fit for a princess and boy did I feel like one!

Fresh fruit platters and daily good night chocolates are the small details that make this stay so memorable. The fully integrated multimedia and lighting system, all with the push of a button awakens on simple touch- again- the detail here is incredible.

Stay here if…

You are looking for luxury in the heart of Zurich. For people like myself who regard customer service as the most important factor in any accommodation, the Storchen will exceed all expectations. Honeymooners will be in ecstasy in the Suites, with his and hers sinks, remote activated beds that have dual control to make each person’s sleep perfect- this is a couple’s retreat that you should splurge on.

Standard rooms start at just 460 Swiss Franc p/night. The recommended Junior Suites range from 800-900 Swiss Franc per night in summer and can be booked directly though their website with a best price guarantee.

Global Roaming was a guest of Hotel Storchen, however all opinions, as always, are my own.
